[…] He was charged with possessing a blade in public and attended his first court appearance. But after that he disappeared and the arrest warrant was issued. At Leicester Crown Court on Friday 44-year-old Singh's barrister, Imran Majid, said his client thought the case was over after his first appearance at court and didn't realise he had to return to the court in East London.

He said: "What Mr Singh tells me is that this was the first time he had been to court and when he left it hadn't been fully explained to him by the interpreter what would happen next and he thought that was the end of the matter. I've explained that this is a serious matter." […]
