Ahmed, of Coventry, Warwickshire, was due to stand trial before a jury and an interpreter was with him in the dock to make sure he understood the proceedings.

The Crown then accepted his not guilty plea after solicitor Andy Iles objected to a transcript of his post-arrest interview being used in evidence.

Mr Iles said: “The interview took place without legal representation or an interpreter being present.

“This objection was made at the first diet hearing earlier this year and is renewed today."

Sheriff Colin Dunipace heard that the Crown conceded the point made by the defence.

Being unable to lead evidence gleaned from Ahmed’s interview, it would not proceed with the prosecution against him. The sheriff then told Ahmed he was free to go. […]
