The 1998 MRC inquiry stated language barriers and the reliance on family members as interpreters hampered researchers' communication with participants.

It was "possible that a word did not exist for 'radiation'" in the languages spoken by the women, the committee's report said.

No interpreter delays Oxfordshire 'testicle twister' case

The lack of a Polish interpreter delayed the case of a man accused of grabbing another’s testicles with such force he caused grievous bodily harm.

Daniel Swiatek, 40, was in front of Oxford Crown Court on Friday (August 18) to answer the allegation of wounding.

But Judge Nigel Daly was forced to put the case off for a week as no interpreter had been booked to translate proceedings for the Polish defendant.

He told the court: “As I have already said, I am reluctant – in fact I won’t – take pleas from somebody who doesn’t speak the language and may not understand exactly what he is pleading to.” […]
