Valerie Vaz (Walsall South, Labour)
To ask the Secretary of State for Justice how much his Department spent
on interpreters and translation services in each month in (a) 2009, (b)
2010, (c) 2011 and (d) 2012.
Shailesh Vara (North West Cambridgeshire, Conservative)
Information on spending on interpreters and translation was not
collected centrally until the start of a contract with Capita Translation and
Interpreting (Capita TI) on 30 January 2012. Before that time the Ministry of
Justice's estimated spending on interpreters and translation was in the region
of £30 million per year (including Her Majesty's Courts and Tribunal Service
and Her Majesty's Prison Service). Monthly breakdowns are not available prior
to February 2012.
Spending with Capita TI for each month of 2012 is included in the following
table. The amount spent with Capita TI increased during 2012 as more bookings
were assigned to them.
Over the first year of the contract with Capita Translation and
Interpretation (starting January 2012) the Department has saved over £16
million pounds in the provision of interpretation and translation services.
