NUBSLI members boycott LanguageLine Solutions
LanguageLine
Solutions (LLS) bid for and were awarded contracts to deliver BSL/English
interpreting services for Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals
and Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). They achieved this by
reducing interpreters’ pay, and terms and conditions, without discussion with
interpreters in the region.
The substantial cut
to fees, due to take effect in Sheffield from 1 November, threatens the
sustainability of the interpreting profession in this area, and as a result the
access provision for the Deaf community. Interpreters in London will also
face the same cuts from 1 December 2016.
So, with reluctance,
in order to sustain a quality interpreting service in and around Sheffield, the
National Union of British Sign Language Interpreters (NUBSLI) is calling on its
members to boycott these contracts, and contracts held by LLS in London that
offer the same unsustainable fees. [...]
