Court resorts to using Google Translate in case of Vietnamese men
accused of growing cannabis
A court computer briefly spoke out when two
Vietnamese men were accused of producing cannabis in the city.
They do not understand English and no interpreter
was available for their appearance at the court on September 8 in front of two magistrates.
In an effort to tell them of the progress of the
case, the court clerk's computer was programmed to use the Google Translate
software. The message rang out: "Coming back on Monday."
It was delivered in a woman's voice and was then
repeated before the pair were led away. They will be held in custody until
then.
No bail applications were made for Le Quoc Amli,
32, and 50-year-old Quan Hoang. They were remanded in custody to face the
magistrates again on Monday.
At the start of the hearing, presiding
magistrate Geoff Evans told them: "We don't have an interpreter today. Do
you understand any English at all?" […]
