The role of the private sector in the criminal justice system
Last month, court interpreters working in the Criminal Justice System decided to withdraw labour over grievances against the private provider that contracts them. They complain about rates of pay, terms and conditions, and a host of troubles with the new booking and invoicing system introduced by thebigword (“TBW”), which enjoys a £15m contract with the Ministry of Justice for court translation services.
The criminal justice system has been no stranger to industrial action over recent years. In 2022, criminal barristers in England and Wales adopted “no returns” policies (refusing to cover for other barristers affected by last-minute scheduling changes) before escalating to walkouts in response to squeezed legal aid funds.
